(ECNS) -- Hong Kong rose to 14th among 139 economies in the 2026 Global Innovation Index (GII) released by the World Intellectual Property Organization on Tuesday, ranking fifth in Asia.
Hong Kong ranked eighth globally in innovation inputs, unchanged from last year, while its innovation outputs ranking rose one place to 21st.
Hong Kong ranked second globally in market sophistication and first in credit. Its rankings in human capital and research, institutions and infrastructure rose to 6th, 7th and 11th, respectively.
Research and development spending, total researcher headcounts, and patent filings in Hong Kong also continued an upward trend.
Government officials in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said they will continue positioning the city as an international innovation and technology hub while aligning with national technology strategies.
Future initiatives include expanding artificial intelligence applications, building out computing infrastructure, and deepening integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
