United in Heart | How did a university in a Shanghai alley become a living memorial to the early days of the United Front?

A revolutionary university was once hailed as "Shanghai University for scholarship, Whampoa for military training" and "Peking University in the north during the May Fourth era, Shanghai University in the south during the May Thirtieth era" .

But who would have thought that it was once tucked away in the narrow-lanes in Shanghai?

Located in the Qingyunli neighbourhood on Qingyun Road in Zhabei, the Shanghai University was where progressive young people gather, taking an active part in the early practices of the united front, forging close ties with Whampoa Military Academy, and helping fuel the May Thirtieth Movement. In just five remarkable years, they wrote an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Communist Party of China's early united front. In the Shanghai University History Museum, a yellowed newspaper from 1922, preserved in a display case, opens a window onto a chapter of united front history buried for a century.
