Tanzanian startup partners with Chinese firms to develop EV assembly

(ECNS) -- Tanzanian automotive startup JTP AUTO is working with Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) companies to develop local electric vehicle assembly and manufacturing capabilities, according to the China-Global South Project, an international media outlet.

The company has been exploring cooperation with several Chinese automakers this year. Beyond importing complete vehicles, JTP AUTO plans to establish EV assembly lines in Tanzania, drawing on Chinese technology and components while developing local technical expertise.

It is reported that Tanzania's NEV market has lagged behind those of other major East African countries, constrained by economic and policy conditions as well as the country's population and market size. While EV assembly plants have been established in several African countries, Tanzania's local EV manufacturing and assembly sector remains at an early stage.

The potential cooperation has drawn attention as Tanzania seeks to expand from importing EVs toward local assembly and manufacturing. For Chinese automakers, it could provide another pathway into the African market, while Tanzania could gain technical expertise and experience in developing an EV supply chain.
