(ECNS) -- Astana's light rail system, Central Asia’s first urban light rail, is carrying an average of about 70,000 passengers a day four months after entering operation, Kazinform reported Wednesday, citing Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry.

The 22.4-kilometer first-phase line, built by Chinese companies, entered operation on May 16. It connects the international airport, botanical garden, government district, national museum and railway station.

The line has 18 stations and uses a fully automated driverless system. It operates 19 four-car trains, each capable of carrying more than 600 passengers.

Transport police are stationed at all 18 stations and conduct onboard patrols and security checks. Since the line opened, officers have also returned more than 200 lost items to passengers.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation served as the project’s main contractor. Chinese companies have also been involved in the project's design, construction, operation and personnel training.
