Shenzhen closes door to foreign garbage

  Shenzhen customs in Guangdong province has cracked down on six cases involving smuggled garbage, seizing more than 2,000 tons of waste from abroad since February, according to Shenzhen customs on Thursday.

  The 2,000 tons of "foreign garbage" uncovered by Shenzhen customs include e-waste, medical waste and old clothes, Wu Wei, press officer from Shenzhen customs, said on Thursday.

  In one typical case, Shenzhen customs raided a packing company in Huizhou city in Guangdong on Feb 27, and found more than 111 tons of old clothes, according to Shenzhen customs.

  The batch of solid waste was smuggled from Israel, investigations found.

  Customs said it will destroyed all the old clothes.

  The efforts are part of a nationwide special campaign targeting foreign garbage, which was launched in February and will last till November.

  Foreign garbage refers to the solid waste produced abroad and banned from being imported into China, including electronic waste, life and medical waste, industrial slag, old clothes, as well as construction waste.
