Afghan president meets U.S. special envoy on peace process

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has met with visiting U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan's peace and reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, on ways of reaching a lasting peace in the country, Presidential Palace said on Monday.

They exchanged views on Sunday at the Afghan Presidential Palace on holding an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace talks, and how to reach an inclusive peace in the country, the palace said in a statement. The meeting was attended by high-ranking Afghan government officials.

"Peace is a holy process and in this way, the government and people of America cooperate with the government and the people of Afghanistan," said Khalilzad.

The U.S. diplomat, leading a delegation, arrived in Afghanistan after visiting Pakistan. He is expected to visit United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar and Saudi Arabia in a latest effort to bring about peace and accelerate Afghan reconciliation process.
