(ECNS) -- A total of 8000 metric tons of imported thermal coal arrived in Guigang, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Thursday via the Pinglu Canal, marking the formal opening of a new river-sea co-transport channel for the city’s power generation.

Sailing west-to-east along the Yujiang River, freighters Guanfeng 666 and Guanfeng 8899 docked at the Guigang power plant and began unloading.

Before the canal’s opening, the China Huadian Corporation relied mainly on the Xijiang River and rail. The new route allows cargo from Qinzhou Port to bypass the Pearl River Delta and sail directly upstream to Guigang, cutting the distance by 280 kilometers.

The shorter journey improves supply-chain resilience, speeds up vessel turnover, and reduces the risk of weather disruptions, benefiting both local enterprises and inland shippers.
