(ECNS) -- A viral online debate has erupted after a low-income household in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, faced a review of its subsistence allowance benefits following the daughter's trip to Hong Kong to attend a concert.
Local authorities said the girl, surnamed Huang, triggered a dynamic monitoring alert for subsidy recipients by making the trip on her own.
Community staff reminded the family of relevant policies, prompting fears their allowance would be revoked.
The household later sought advice online.
Officials said they are verifying the family's situation and will handle the case in line with regulations.
Jiangxi's rural subsistence allowance standard is 785 yuan ($117) per person per month, with the family reportedly receiving about 2,000 yuan monthly. The daughter saved 3,000–5,000 yuan from part-time jobs and stipends to cover concert expenses.
In a commentary Wednesday, People's Daily stressed that welfare eligibility is assessed on a household basis, with collective income and expenditure considered. It noted subsistence allowances are public fiscal resources reserved for vulnerable groups, saying: "Every penny embodies the aspiration for social equity and must be channeled accurately to genuinely disadvantaged groups in urgent need of assistance."
