(ECNS) -- A batch of 8.5 metric tons of fresh pomegranates from Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, southwest China, has been exported to Vietnam, marking the first pomegranate export from the region, Kunming Customs said on Tuesday.
The shipment was inspected and cleared by Tianbao Customs, a subsidiary of Kunming Customs, according to the statement.
Hu Zhenghua, head of the exporting company in Malipo County, said the company has a 14-hectare pomegranate plantation in Yanshan County, with an annual output of about 420 metric tons. The company had received inquiries from Vietnamese clients but was concerned about export procedures, he said. Following the successful shipment, the company is now more confident about expanding into international markets, Hu added.
Dai Yi, head of the audit section at Tianbao Customs, said customs authorities have established streamlined procedures for fresh produce to ensure timely clearance. Measures such as online issuance of inspection and quarantine certificates and appointment-based inspections have reduced storage and logistics costs while minimizing product losses, Dai said.
In the first eight months of this year, Tianbao Customs supervised the export of 9,055 metric tons of agricultural products valued at 190 million yuan (about $27.8 million), up 190% and 85% respectively year on year. The products were shipped to 30 countries and regions, including Vietnam, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
