(ECNS) -- The "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" region has retained its position as the world's top innovation cluster, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Innovation Cluster Ranking 2026 released on Tuesday.
China has three clusters in the top 10, with the "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" cluster ranking first, followed by the Beijing cluster in fifth place and the "Shanghai-Suzhou" cluster in sixth place. China's total number of listed clusters has ranked first in the world for four consecutive years.
A spokesman for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government said the ranking once again affirms the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's outstanding innovation capabilities and its financial ecosystem supporting innovation and technology. He said the government will accelerate the development of innovation and technology, deepen collaboration with cities in the Greater Bay Area, and promote the integrated development of technological and industrial innovation to become an international innovation and technology hub.
The cluster ranking is based on three core indicators: the number of international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the number of scientific publications, and venture capital transaction volume.
