China's Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng has summoned the Canadian Ambassador to China John McCallum to lodge solemn representations and strongly protest the unreasonable arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer for tech giant Huawei, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

China urges the Canadian side to release Meng immediately and protect her legal and legitimate rights, or face grave consequences and take full responsibility for this, Le said.

Meng, who is also the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, was detained at the request of U.S. authorities while she was changing planes in Vancouver on December 1.

It was a serious breach of her lawful rights, Le said, adding that Meng's detention by Canadian authorities was unlawful, unreasonable, and nasty in nature.
