China dominate table tennis doubles at Universiade

The Chinese table tennis players kept domination by sweeping golds and silvers in both men's and women's doubles here at Palatrincone, Napoli Universiade on Wednesday.

Fan Siqi/Wang Yidi took an easy win over their compatriots Zhang Rui/Guo Yan 4-0 in 22 minutes. Wang told Xinhua that it was her first time to pair with Fan and she felt good to win the game in a relaxing way.

"The opponents in the final are also my teammates. We don't feel any pressure; just try to play the best of ourselves," Wang added. "We won't have much time to celebrate because both of us will play the women's singles semifinals tomorrow. Hope we'll meet in the final, if everything goes fine."

Yu Ziyang/Zhao Zihao defeated their compatriots Kong Lingxuan/Zhu Linfeng 4-1. The latter duo, the veterans of the Unversiades, knocked down the Japanese players in the men's team competitions in the 2017 Taipei event. Yu/Zhao, with the higher world rankings, claimed the title and the two pairs contributed more medals for the team of dream.

"We're very familiar with each other, though it was my first time to play with Yu in the world stage," said Zhao.

China has secured the gold, silver and bronze medals of women's singles because of the all-Chinese semifinals that will take place on Thursday.

The men's team has taken three out of four positions of the singles semifinals. China is expected to sweep all the seven table tennis titles at Unversiade.

In swimming pool, China's Bao Ying touched the eighth in women's 50m freestyle final.

In taekwondo women's 67kg, China's Shan Yunyun from Soochow University got silver after losing to the world ninth Magda Wiet-Henin from France.

In the football pitch, the Chinese women's team beat host Italy 1-0 and will fight for the fifth ranking against South Korea.

In track and field, China's Gong Kewei won the second place in the 1,500m race of decathlon.
