Zhao Houlin, the incumbent secretary-general of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), was re-elected to head the organization for the next four years with majority votes during the 2018 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in Dubai on Thursday.

After extending his congratulation, Chen Zhaoxiong, China's vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that Chinese government will donate 2 million U.S. dollars in the next four years to the ITU for bridging the digital gap among the developing countries.

ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. It includes 193 member states, ICT regulators, leading academic institutions and some 700 private companies.

The Plenipotentiary Conference is the key event at which the ITU member states decide on the future role of the organization, thereby determining the organization's ability to influence and affect the development of information and communication technologies worldwide. Enditem
