A pair of Russian artist-adventurers scaled the spire of New York's Empire State Building and unfurled a giant banner calling for world peace on Wednesday, in what appeared to be a meticulously orchestrated proposal stunt. According to the New York Post, a helicopter broadcast the entire scene live. Police officers climbed the tower and arrested the two.
The couple, dressed in black and wearing masks, displayed a white-on-black banner from the top of the 443‑metre landmark.
A New York Police Department spokesperson told AFP: "The two individuals have been taken into custody without incident, and no injuries were reported. Charges are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.
According to reports, the man knelt on one knee in what appeared to be a proposal, and the couple then embraced and kissed.

The Empire State Building has a publicly accessible observation deck with sweeping views of New York, but climbing any higher is strictly forbidden. Nevertheless, past attempts to scale the landmark have been recorded.
