Why devote a lifetime to guarding an ancient bridge? Wang Qixue, 65, has spent over 40 years repairing Luding Bridge, which spans the Dadu River.
The bridge is best known for a pivotal battle during the LongMarch. On May 29, 1935, 22 Red Army soldiers braved enemy fire as they crossed the bridge’s iron chains and seized the bridge, clearing the way for the main force to advance north.
Inspired by their courage, Wang vows to guard the bridge for life and pass on the legacy of the Long March to future generations.
