The Three Gorges Reservoir stores water at the end of the flood season each year, then gradually releases it during the dry season and lowers its water level before the next flood season. This approach ensures adequate water for shipping, water supply, ecological needs and power generation across the Yangtze River basin in winter and the following spring.
