(ECNS) -- Chinese table tennis star Fan Zhendong spoke out against covert filming on Wednesday, saying such behavior violates personal privacy and shows a lack of respect, regardless of the filmer's identity or intentions.
In a post on his personal Weibo account, Fan said that filming someone without their consent remained an invasion of privacy, even if done in the name of love or if the footage was shared only at a later date.
"Rational fans and friendly passersby don't greet me with their phones held up and cameras rolling," Fan wrote, adding that he had always been happy to respond to them.
"But when people film me while calling out to me, trying to strike up a conversation or even get close to me, I really can't tell whether they're fans or those looking to cash in on online traffic through social media," he said.
Fan concluded his post by quoting an ancient Chinese saying: "Respect yourself and others will respect you. "
