(ECNS) -- China is likely to have a warmer winter because the strongest El Niño is expected to be on record, according to an expert from the Chinese Meteorological Service Association.
The event could also bring rapid swings between drought and flooding, Xu Xiaofeng, president of the Chinese Meteorological Service Association, warned, with areas experiencing water shortages suddenly hit by heavy rain or typhoons.
The ongoing El Niño has already affected China's climate and is expected to become the strongest since records began, according to monitoring data.
Super El Niño events also have a delayed effect, with bigger impacts expected next spring and summer.
