(ECNS) -- Three people have been placed in administrative detention in Beijing for insulting a Chinese national table tennis coach during the 2026 WTT China Smash, police said Saturday.
Shijingshan District police said in a statement that they found that 20 people had gathered to publicly insult the coach during the tournament on Monday.
Among them, two women surnamed Yang and Li, both 19, and a 16-year-old girl surnamed Tao repeatedly verbally abused the coach as the team passed through a walkway at the venue. They also posted insulting remarks online and shared videos of the verbal abuse filmed at the scene, which police said had a serious negative social impact.
Police said the three were detained in accordance with the law because of the severity of their violations, while the other 17 people involved were reprimanded.
