World's tallest dam hydropower station puts three units into operation

(ECNS) -- The Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station on the Dadu River in Southwest China's Sichuan Province has put all three generating units of its first phase into operation, according to China Energy Investment Corporation on Monday.

Located in Aba Prefecture, the key national energy project features a 315-meter-high dam, currently the tallest in the world. The station has a total installed capacity of 2 million kilowatts, with four 500,000-kilowatt Francis turbine generating units, and a reservoir capacity of 2.9 billion cubic meters.

Since the first unit went online in June, the facility launched three units within two months to meet peak summer electricity demands in the Sichuan-Chongqing economic circle, supplying 500 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity so far. Once all units are fully operational, the station will generate about 7.7 billion kWh annually, boosting downstream stations’ output by 6.6 billion kWh.
