(ECNS) -- The world’s first 35 kV high-voltage direct-connected synchronous condenser has entered regular service at Shengshan Wind Farm in Heihe, Heilongjiang Province, State Grid Heilongjiang Electric Power announced Wednesday.

Developed by Harbin Electric Machinery Co., Ltd., the 50 Mvar/35 kV air-water-cooled condenser is the first of its kind to combine steady regulation with dynamic grid support.

Unlike conventional equipment, it does not rely on the grid for voltage and frequency references, but autonomously maintains stability with inertia and damping characteristics similar to synchronous generators.

Officials said the device doubles short circuit capacity compared with existing 10.5 kV condensers, enhances the grid’s ability to absorb fluctuations from renewable output, and delivers faster reactive power response. Directly connected to the station’s 35 kV busbar without step up transformers, it improves efficiency and long term economic performance.

The installation raises Shengshan Wind Farm’s generating capacity from 100 MW to 200 MW. State Grid Heilongjiang said the project strengthens system reliability in a province where renewable energy already accounts for more than half of installed capacity.
