(ECNS) -- A rare rock painting depicting a chariot pulled by four horses has been discovered in the Helan Mountains in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, according to the Helan Mountain Rock Art Management Office.

The carving, found on a partially buried rock in the Helankou Rock Art Protection Zone, measures 24 by 20 centimeters with marks about 1.5 millimeters deep.

Fewer than 20 known examples of horse drawn chariots exist in the region, all showing two horses. Four-horse chariots are also uncommon in rock art elsewhere in China and abroad.

Known as a “history book carved in stone,” Helan Mountain rock art offers glimpses into ancient communities. Officials said the new find adds to the diversity of the collection and provides fresh material for studying early societies in northern China. The site will continue to be monitored and protected.
