A cow is killed at a slaughterhouse in Changde, Central China’s Hunan province, Jan 28, 2015. As a result of a severe industry slump, 173 cows of local dairy farm Xiangmin Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. have been slaughtered in four months to prevent further losses. The farm owner Pi Hui, who has been in the dairy farming for over 30 years, said the cost of fresh milk is 3.94 yuan ($0.63) per kilogram but it sells at 3.7 yuan. Pi lost 3120 yuan each day and called it the “coldest wave” in the sector, Changde Evening News reports. He also blamed the plummeting milk prices on import of cheaper foreign milk. [Photo/ CFP]
