Doan Thi Huong, a Vietnamese woman involved in the murder of a Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) man in 2017 in Malaysia, will walk free on May 3, her lawyer said Saturday.

"We have been told by prison authorities that Huong will be freed on May 3," lawyer Salim Bashir told AFP. "Huong is in a jovial mood. The young woman is expected to be immediately flown to Hanoi."

Huong, 30, was accused of smearing the DPRK man with a nerve agent at Kuala Lumpur airport on February 13, 2017, resulting in his death. Her Indonesian co-defendant, Siti Aisyah, was released last month after two years in custody.

Malaysian prosecutors dropped the murder charge against Huong on April 1, and changed the charge to "voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means."

Huong promptly pleaded guilty to the new charge and the judge sentenced her to three years and four months in prison. The prison term would be counted from February 15, 2017, the date she was arrested.

Huong's counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told reporters earlier this month that the defense team expected Huong to be released by the first week of May, with the two years already served and the remaining one-third of her term granted remission.
