The State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company has introduced a slew of measures to effectively maintain the city's power supply as soaring temperatures push electricity demand to a record high.

At 11:23 am on Monday, Shanghai's power grid reached a peak electricity load of 40.55 million kilowatts, up 0.6 percent from last year's record of 40.30 million kilowatts, setting a new historical high.

Currently situated between a subtropical high-pressure system and a rain belt, the city experiences both intense heat and humidity that continues to drive electricity demand upward.

As a result, State Grid Shanghai has rolled out a series of effective measures including city-level scheduling coordination, inter-provincial green power trading and virtual power plant adjustment to cope with the high temperatures and high power load this summer.

Apart from maximizing local power generation capacity to 23.6 million kilowatts, State Grid Shanghai is actively expanding power supply through inter-provincial sources. To date, Shanghai has purchased 7.21 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity generated from renewable sources via the inter-provincial green power collaborations among 15 provinces and regions.

To better facilitate the city's power supply and services, a team of more than 2,800 staff members, over 890 emergency repair vehicles, 64 large-sized power generation vehicles and 240 emergency generators are on standby around the clock.
