In 1937, during the Nanjing Massacre committed by the Japanese invaders, German John Rabe, along with other international figures in China, established the Nanjing Safety Zone, providing shelter for more than 250,000 Chinese civilians. Rabe's former residence is located at No. 1 Xiaofenqiao, Guangzhou Road, near the south gate of the Gulou campus of Nanjing University.
