(ECNS) — The wild Asian elephant population in China's Yunnan Province has risen to more than 300, marking steady growth for the endangered species, provincial forestry officials said Tuesday on World Elephant Day.

Once in decline, the elephants now range across Xishuangbanna, Pu'er and Lincang, aided by expanded habitats and stronger protection measures. China has established 11 nature reserves in key areas, and experts report not only population growth but also wider ranges and behavioral shifts.

To mark the day, Xishuangbanna hosted a public event, featuring interactive programs designed to engage tourists and wildlife enthusiasts while raising awareness about Asian elephant conservation.

Local monitoring centers use drones, infrared cameras, and other technology to track elephant movements and prevent human-elephant conflicts through data-driven interventions.
