Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that Iran intends to stay in the 2015 nuclear deal which serves its interests, state TV reported.
"By remaining in the nuclear deal, we will achieve a big political, security goal," Rouhani said, adding according to both the deal and the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the UN arms embargo on Iran will end next year.
"When the sanction is lifted next year, we can easily buy and sell weapons," he noted.
This would be "a political success" for Iran which is attainable by remaining in the nuclear deal, Rouhani said.
The UN arms embargo, which was imposed on Iran in 2015 under the Iranian nuclear deal, will be lifted in October 2020.
Following the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018, Iran has cut some commitments to the accord but said it will keep abiding by parts of it.
Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the UN Security Council to renew its arms embargo against Iran when it expires next year.
