(ECNS) -- Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department said Wednesday that the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 1.7% year on year in August 2026, unchanged from the rate recorded in July.
After excluding all the government’s one-off relief measures, the year-on-year increase in the Composite CPI, known as the underlying inflation rate, stood at 1.9% in August, also unchanged from July.
Compared with the same period last year, prices for electricity, gas and water climbed 11.5%; miscellaneous services rose 4.7%; transport rose 3.9%; miscellaneous goods increased 2.5%; meals out and takeaway food edged up 1.1%; durable goods rose 0.8%; and housing inched 0.1% higher. Prices for basic food dipped by 0.2%.
A Hong Kong SAR Government spokesperson said inflation would continue to face upward pressure as high international oil prices continued to feed through to fuel-related items. Still, price pressures on other major components remained largely contained, keeping overall inflation at a moderate level.
