(ECNS) - A report released by iResearch Consulting Group and SenseTime, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company, said AI-based cellphones will drive new breakthroughs in applications and promote further development in the industry.

The report said AI will drive improvements in the cellphone industry chain through deepening cooperation between upstream and downstream manufacturers. AI companies will play a more important role in shaping the industrial structure and business model.

The use of AI technology will maximize the utility of cellphone software and hardware through key visual and voice applications, according to the report.

Among the top 10 functions, users of AI-based mobile phones most value face recognition-based unlocking followed by smart lighting, filters to boost appearance and image recognition.

The report said shipments of AI-powered smartphones will increase from less than 10 percent of the total in 2017 to 80 percent by 2022, with annual sales projected to surpass 1.3 billion phones.

Domestic smartphone makers and AI technical solution providers have gradually worked out a cooperation model as AI is increasingly applied in the sector, according to the report.

Founded in 2014 and now valued at $4.5 billion, SenseTime is said to be the world’s most valuable AI unicorn and the largest pure-play AI company. The Ministry of Science and Technology of China has officially entrusted SenseTime to establish the nation’s fifth national AI platform along with Baidu, Alibaba Cloud, Tencent and iFLYTEK.
