"The local Tibetan people named this pine tree 'Red Army Umbrella,' hoping it will remain evergreen and guard the heroic spirits." Ma Hua, a red culture education instructor, recounted that her grandfather witnessed Red Army soldiers sacrifice their lives while crossing Jiajin Mountain in Southwest China's Sichuan and later told the story to the local Tibetan people. Unable to bear the martyrs' remains being left exposed in the wilderness, the local Tibetan people followed the Red Army's route to recover the bodies. The martyrs were later buried beside a pine tree, which was used as a tombstone marker. (By Xue Lingqiao)
