1.China firmly opposes U.S. additional tariff on semiconductors from China

China disagrees with the so-called conclusions of the U.S. Section 301 investigation and firmly opposes the imposition of additional Section 301 tariffs on Chinese semiconductor products, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative recently released the results of its Section 301 investigation into China's semiconductor policies, announcing plans to impose new Section 301 tariff measures on semiconductors from China. The action will begin with an initial tariff rate of zero percent and rise within 18 months to a level to be announced no fewer than 30 days before June 23, 2027.

China has noted the relevant situation and lodged stern representations with the U.S. side through the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism, spokesperson He Yongqian said at a regular press briefing.

5.World's longest expressway tunnel opens to traffic in Xinjiang

The 22.13-km Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the world's longest expressway tunnel, officially opened to traffic on Friday.

Traversing the central Tianshan Mountains in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the tunnel slashes what was once a several-hour mountain drive to just 20 minutes.

As a vital artery linking city clusters in northern and southern Xinjiang, the G0711 Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, including the tunnel, entered operation on the same day.

Stretching 2,500 kilometers, the Tianshan Mountains span central Xinjiang, separating Urumqi, the largest city in the north, from Korla, the largest city in the south. With the opening of the expressway, travel time between these two major cities is reduced from 7 hours to approximately 3 hours, promoting economic integration between northern and southern Xinjiang and creating new channels for external exchanges.

6.Hainan FTP launches phased zero-carbon industrial park initiative

South China's Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) has initiated a plan to develop zero-carbon industrial parks, as outlined in a joint notification from five provincial government departments, including the Development and Reform Commission and the Department of Industry and Information Technology.

The initiative aims to phase in low-carbon and zero-carbon transformations across various parks, with qualified zones prioritized to achieve zero-carbon status.

A key focus is building a robust zero-carbon energy infrastructure by integrating renewable sources such as wind, solar, biomass and nuclear power from surrounding areas. This will involve deploying energy storage systems to ensure the stable supply of heat and electricity, promoting direct green power connections, and developing smart microgrids compatible with the main grid to enhance flexibility and security.

9.Mainland police seek information on 2 suspected Taiwan smugglers

A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that police are seeking information on two Taiwan residents suspected of smuggling frozen goods to the mainland.

The two, surnamed Chien and Chen, operated the Togo-registered "Hong Tai 58" and other boats to engage in smuggling activities for a long time, according to Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, citing a police notice issued by the public security bureau of Weihai, Shandong Province, on Wednesday.

Peng criticized a false claim by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities that the mainland had operated "Hong Tai 58" to sabotage an undersea cable off Taiwan in an incident in February.

On December 24, 2025, the Weihai Municipal Public Security Bureau in East China's Shandong Province issued a wanted notice stating that in June 2025, during an investigation into a suspect surnamed Liu and six other mainland crew members of the "Hongtai 58," police uncovered a smuggling syndicate led by Taiwan residents Jian Wensheng and Chen Shunjin.
