(ECNS) -- A Shanghai-produced micro drama series titled Ling Tan (meaning Soul's KPI) has drawn widespread attention, with its views across multiple online video platforms quickly surpassing 10 million views.
Consisting of 46 episodes, each around two minutes long, the show combines light comedy with AI-assisted production. More importantly, it demonstrates a scalable solution to long-standing challenges in AI-generated content, such as character consistency, scene continuity and production efficiency—issues that have previously limited AIGC works to only a few minutes in total length.
The series is billed as China's first AIGC-powered, live-action-style short drama with a total runtime exceeding 100 minutes. Its success marks a significant step forward in the industrial application of artificial intelligence in long-form audiovisual production.
The production team adopted a hybrid workflow that integrates multiple AI tools with human creative oversight, enabling large-scale content generation while maintaining narrative coherence.
The project was developed at a hi-tech smart industry community in Songjiang District, which provides high-performance computing infrastructure linked to a regional supercomputing center.
According to industry estimates, the AI-driven approach reduced production costs to about one-fifth of traditional methods and shortened production cycles by more than half, turning AIGC long-form content from an experimental endeavor to a commercially viable model.
The success of the drama also reflects Shanghai's broader policy support for the micro drama industry. Over the past 18 months, the city has invested nearly 40 million yuan(about $56.81 million) to support sector development, while dedicated incubation funds and industrial clusters are helping attract talent and resources.
Experts say the combination of technological innovation, computing infrastructure and targeted policy support is giving Shanghai a competitive edge in the rapidly growing micro drama market.
