(ECNS)--The Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf, Germany, confirmed on Thursday that over 100 Chinese participants attending the MEDICA 2025, a trade fair for medical technology and healthcare, developed symptoms of food poisoning on Nov. 17.
According to officials from the Chinese consulate, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was triggered by a food safety issue in boxed meals provided by a local Chinese restaurant. At least four people were hospitalized, but no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported. The consulate is still verifying the exact number of affected individuals, which is initially estimated to exceed 100. Hospitalized participants are now in stable condition.
The officials said the consulate immediately contacted the affected exhibitors following the incident and quickly reached out to the restaurant, urging it to take prompt measures to properly address the situation and issue an apology to those affected. A dedicated working group has also been established by the consulate to monitor the development of the case.
The restaurant issued an apology on social media on Wednesday, acknowledging serious mistakes in the preparation of the group meals, including insufficient thawing and cooking time for the meat, which led to discomfort among diners. The restaurant said it had taken remedial measures, including distributing medication and assisting severely affected exhibitors to receive medical treatment.
