Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sent a ritual offering and monetary donation to the Yasukuni Shrine on Oct. 17 and 19, while multiple Japanese government officials, senior officials of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and parliamentarians paid visits to the site recently. Such acts lay bare their deep-rooted erroneous perceptions on historical issues, as well as their sinister attempt to exonerate war criminals, reverse the verdict on aggression and pave the way for remilitarization.
From honoring war criminals to revising textbooks and using new technologies to "poison" data, Japan's right-wing forces have persistently sought to whitewash its history of aggression and distort public perceptions of World War II.
The "gray rhino" of Japan's neo-militarism is mutating and spiraling out of control, charging recklessly ahead on a wave of ambition. Its unchecked advance threatens the postwar international order and tramples on international rules. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trials, and Japan needs to face up to its wartime crimes, and the international community must see through the true agenda behind its remilitarization and safeguard the hard-won peace of humanity.
