(ECNS) -- The largest container ship to dock in Hainan since China began developing a free trade port there berthed Thursday at Yangpu International Container Terminal in the country's southernmost province.
The COSCO Atlantic is 399.67 meters (1,311 feet) long and 58.6 meters (192 feet) wide. It can carry 18,982 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, a standard measure of container capacity. Its gross tonnage is 188,638. The ship set a new record for the port.
Yangpu Port is an international shipping hub serving Southeast Asia and connected to the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor in western China. Chinese authorities also describe it as a gateway for opening up toward the Pacific and Indian oceans and a core port of the Hainan free trade port.
The terminal's quay is 1,970 meters (6,463 feet) long and can handle ships of up to 24,000 TEUs, among the world's largest.
