(ECNS) -- The 2026 Tianjin International Seed Expo opened on Sunday in Xiqing District, Tianjin, bringing together nearly 1,000 leading seed companies and showcasing more than 10,000 new and high-quality crop varieties.

The expo features one comprehensive field exhibition and two specialized field exhibitions, displaying 1,656 new varieties from 285 companies. The comprehensive field exhibition showcases 986 varieties across 11 categories, including corn, spinach and radish. The radish-themed exhibition features more than 500 radish varieties from nearly 100 companies and is the first of its kind in China.

International seed and agricultural technology companies exhibiting at the event include Japan's Takii Seed, UK-based Croda, Italy's C.A.C. (Cooperativa Agricola Cesenate), and Israel's Hazera.

Shandong-based Huasheng Seed Group Co., Ltd. is participating as a special exhibitor for the first time, after previously attending as a visitor. Ouyang Shikao, the company's deputy general manager, said buyers from Belt and Road partner countries such as Nepal have shown strong interest in zucchini, radish and onion varieties, with some planning to visit the company's facilities after the expo.

Tianjin HYBREQ Seed & Sci-tech Co., Ltd., now in its ninth consecutive year at the expo, showcased a fruit-type radish called "Sweet Heart Rose Radish." Li Aijun, the company's product manager for the northwest region, said the radish is sweet, crisp and not peppery, making it popular among consumers and buyers.

Shen Xin, chair of the supervisory board of the Tianjin Society of Agronomy, said the field exhibitions allow buyers to assess how the varieties perform in the field before making purchasing decisions, helping growers adjust their crop mix for the coming year. The expo aims to promote quality varieties more widely, improve agricultural efficiency and boost farmers' incomes, Shen said.
