(ECNS) -- Fresh fruits and vegetables from across China are reaching overseas markets through Manzhouli, the country's largest land port, in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, as refrigerated trucks carrying watermelons, mangoes, grapes, pomelos and tomatoes clear border inspections and head abroad.
The Manzhouli Entry-Exit Border Inspection Station said it has inspected 242,000 inbound and outbound freight vehicle trips this year, up 32.7% from a year earlier, as of Tuesday. The port exported 217,500 metric tons of fruits and vegetables, worth more than 1.5 billion yuan ($210 million), from January to August.
Sun Bo, a cross-border fruit and vegetable trader, said Chinese produce is gaining popularity overseas for its quality and competitive prices, with orders rising every year.
Pomelos, tomatoes and green peppers are among the most popular exports, Sun said. Their relatively long shelf life and versatility make them suitable for everyday household purchases as well as holiday sales in supermarkets, keeping demand steady throughout the year, Sun added.
