(ECNS) — More than 60% of China's autumn grain has been harvested as the harvest enters its peak, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said Tuesday.
More than 70% of the harvest is complete in the Huang-Huai-Hai region (covering the Yellow, Huai and Hai river basins) and northwestern China, while progress has exceeded 50% in northeastern China and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and reached nearly 30% in southern China.
Weather conditions have been generally favorable in most of northeastern China, which accounts for nearly 40% of the country's autumn grain planting area and output, the ministry said. At Beidahuang 856 Farm in Heilongjiang province, an expert panel measured an average yield of 683.63 jin (about 342 kilograms, or 754 pounds) per mu on a 260-mu (about 43-acre) soybean plot, a new provincial record for 100-mu soybean plots.
In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, sunny weather and suitable temperatures are helping late rice mature. Weather conditions have generally been favorable in southwestern China, with significantly fewer weather-related disasters. Autumn crops in northwestern China are also growing well, with harvesting picking up pace.
Harvesting is progressing slightly faster than in a typical year, and the ministry expects another bumper autumn grain harvest.
