(ECNS) — Guangzhou South Railway Station in southern China's Guangdong province recorded 1.049 million passenger arrivals and departures in one day during the National Day holiday, making it the first Chinese station to top 1 million in a single day.
As of 12 a.m. Thursday, the station had handled 5.59 million arrivals and departures during the holiday, up 7.4% from a year earlier, a record for the holiday, according to China Railway Guangzhou Group.
The record-breaking passenger traffic reflects activity in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, where people, capital and talent continue to flow across the region.
The nine mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area recorded a combined gross domestic product of 5.95 trillion yuan (about $888 billion) in the first half of 2026, and their total imports and exports grew 20.9% from a year earlier, Xinhua reported.
Guangdong attracted more than 1.1 million college graduates in 2025 and more than 1 million more in the first eight months of 2026, reaching its annual recruitment target ahead of schedule.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou innovation cluster once again ranked first globally.
