China urges Japan to stop advancing its remilitarization agenda: spokesperson

(ECNS) -- On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trials, China urged Japan to seriously reflect on its history of aggression, heed the calls of regional countries and stop advancing its remilitarization agenda, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday.

Guo made the remarks at a regular media briefing when asked about a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson's statement that Russia had sent a note of protest to Japan over the deployment of Typhon missile systems on Kyushu Island, and whether China had also sent a diplomatic note to Japan.

The deployment of the Typhon missile system, a strategic offensive weapon, is yet another example of Japan's accelerated "remilitarization," Guo said.

Such a move will only increase the risks of military confrontation and an arms race, threaten strategic balance and regional stability, and undermine the legitimate security interests of neighboring countries, Guo said.

The international community is on high alert over the move, with people in multiple Asian countries voicing opposition to the deployment, he said.

He noted that China has also lodged strong protests with Japan through diplomatic channels on multiple occasions and recently sent a diplomatic note to the Japanese side to reiterate China's solemn position.
