(ECNS) -- Asia is becoming a major driver of global coffee consumption growth, with China emerging as one of the fastest-growing markets, experts said at the China Tropical Crops Industry Conference held in Kunming, southwest China’s Yunnan Province.
According to Cao Fuliang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, coffee consumption in Asia is growing four to five times faster than in other regions.
China’s coffee market has exceeded 200 billion yuan (about $28 billion) annually and is growing by around 20% each year, helping drive growth in global coffee supply and processing.
Tao Jian, chairman of the Coffee Finance website, said China has evolved from a coffee producer and exporter into a major importer and could further develop into a regional coffee trading hub, with Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta and Yunnan serving as links to coffee-producing regions across Asia and beyond.
According to the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government, Yunnan’s coffee planting area reached 97,500 hectares in 2025, up 15.4% year on year. About 32,500 metric tons of Yunnan coffee were exported to 29 countries and regions, including the Netherlands, Germany and the United States, with exports surging 358%.
On the same day, Yunnan established a provincial coffee standards committee and released new coffee varieties and technologies covering breeding, cultivation and processing.
