Festive lanterns from 20 countries, regions light up Hong Kong for Mid-Autumn Festival

(ECNS) -- The International Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival featuring the "World Lantern Boulevard" and various lanterns from around the world opened on Thursday at Victoria Park in Hong Kong. 

The "World Lantern Boulevard" brings together festive lanterns from 20 countries and regions, including Brazil, France, India and Thailand. More than 3,000 lanterns in a variety of designs showcase diverse folk traditions and festive colors from around the world.

A man surnamed Yu, in his 70s, said this year's carnival was larger than in previous years, with more lanterns on display.

Another highlight of the event is a Nanjing Qinhuai lantern installation. Standing at the center of the venue, the 8-meter-tall installation is inspired by a banyan tree.

"The banyan tree represents the roots of one's hometown and echoes the theme of reunion, bringing everyone together at the center," said Zhu Mingtao, head of the design department.

Zhu said this was the first time Qinhuai lanterns had been displayed in Hong Kong. The team hopes the event will introduce Hong Kong residents and visitors from around the world to Qinhuai lanterns and showcase the charm of this national-level intangible cultural heritage.

The event will run until Sept. 27, with a variety of performances and festive activities taking place throughout the carnival.
