(ECNS) -- A 2026 report released at the 5th International Summit on BDS Applications projected that China's BDS industry could surpass 1 trillion yuan (about $140 billion) during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30).

The summit kicked off in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province on Tuesday, attracting about 900 experts, scholars, business leaders, government officials and representatives of international organizations from China and abroad.

At the summit, new BDS cooperation initiatives were announced in Kazakhstan, Brazil and Malaysia, expanding the system’s international presence.

Cambodia’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth noted that BDS can provide backup communications when disasters disrupt ground networks, adding that Cambodia is also exploring broader applications of BDS in its satellite industry.

Alibek Nasimov, an engineer at Kazakhstan’s Institute of Space Technology, said BDS could support vehicle and cargo tracking, cross-border freight management and road monitoring, particularly in remote areas.

BDS is already being used in applications ranging from smart port operations in Peru and bridge monitoring in the Maldives to precision agriculture in Laos and taxi dispatching in Cambodia.

China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is one of four global satellite navigation systems recognized by the United Nations and is used in areas including disaster response, transportation, infrastructure monitoring and agriculture.
