(ECNS) -- Shanghai Pudong International Airport has been ranked the best-connected airport in the Asia-Pacific for 2025, according to the Airport Industry Connectivity Report released on Monday by Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East.
The airport also received the award for the greatest improvement in connectivity, recording a 32% increase.
Dubai International Airport ranked first in the Middle East. The report showed that connectivity across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions grew by an average of 11% in 2025, with Asia-Pacific up 10% and the Middle East up 21%.
Expanding route network
By the end of 2025, Shanghai Pudong had added new medium- and long-haul destinations including Belgrade, Casablanca, Geneva, Dublin and Tbilisi, along with Asian destinations such as Shymkent, Almaty, Tashkent and Ulaanbaatar. The airport now serves 291 destinations across 53 countries, a record high for the number of countries served.
The world's longest non-stop passenger route, linking Shanghai, Auckland and Buenos Aires, is scheduled to increase from two to four flights per week by the end of the year.
Passenger and cargo traffic
In 2025, Shanghai Pudong handled 84.99 million passenger trips and 4.09 million metric tons of cargo and mail, with 16.2% of passengers in transit.
On Sept. 4, the airport became the first in China to handle more than 25 million inbound and outbound passenger trips for the year, reaching the milestone six days earlier than the previous year. Of this total, more than 2.8 million passengers benefited from the 24-hour direct transit visa-free policy. A growing number of domestic and Asian passengers are choosing to transfer through Shanghai Pudong on their way to long-haul destinations such as Europe.
Airline operations and transit services
A total of 110 airlines now operate scheduled flights at Shanghai Pudong. Since last year, 13 new passenger and cargo carriers have begun operating at the airport. The airport has also introduced measures to improve transfer efficiency, including inter-airline and cross-terminal connections, as well as seamless "one check-in, luggage through-check" transfer services.
Chinese hubs in regional rankings
Among the top 10 airports in the 2025 total connectivity rankings for the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, Chinese airports claimed four spots: Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. The report predicts that as air connectivity continues to grow, airport development will become increasingly aligned with airspace capacity, infrastructure and policy environments.
