(ECNS) -- John Barker, director general of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), said Thursday that China has the capability to become a major producer of high-quality wine, citing its commitment to sustainability and growing expertise in local terroir.

Speaking at a press conference for the 47th World Congress of Vine and Wine and OIV General Assembly in Beijing, Barker noted China’s wine industry is gaining international recognition for its openness, global vision and pursuit of excellence.

He said this year’s congress will spotlight Ningxia, underscoring China’s role in global standards, trade facilitation and consumer protection.

Wang Li, vice chairwoman of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said Ningxia has stabilized the wine industry amid transformation, with vineyard area, winery numbers and output all ranking among the nation’s highest.

The congress, scheduled for Oct. 12–16 in Yinchuan, will include a symposium, science and technology forum, industry visits and the OIV General Assembly.
