Suspension bridge cable snaps at Xinjiang scenic area, killing 5​

(ECNS) -- A cable failure caused the deck of a suspension bridge to tilt abruptly at a scenic spot in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region on Wednesday evening, claiming five lives.

The accident occurred at around 6:18 p.m. in Xiata Scenic Area of Zhaosu County, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang. 

Twenty-nine people slid off the bridge amid the collapse, according to local authorities.

Tragically, 5 individuals lost their lives in the incident. Among the injured, 22 sustained minor wounds while 2 remain in serious condition.

All injured persons have been transported to hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment.

The scenic area has been closed as an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
