As the only porpoise species living entirely in freshwater, the Yangtze finless porpoise resonates deeply with Wuhan's vibrant, dynamic spirit, said Hao Yujiang, director of the Yangtze Cetacean Breeding and Research Center at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He expressed his delight after the announcement in April 2026 that the animal had been named Wuhan's official city mascot.
Years of work to rehabilitate the Yangtze's natural environment have turned these creatures from occasional rare sightings into familiar residents, with stable populations now thriving here.
