As of Wednesday, south China's Guangdong Province had reported 171 dengue fever cases this year, up 36 percent from the same period a year ago, health authorities said Thursday.

Of those cases, 103 caught the virus outside the province and there were no deaths, according to a statement issued by Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission.

The provincial capital Guangzhou saw 79 cases, the highest among the 14 cities with reported cases, followed by Shenzhen and Foshan with 31 and 28 cases, respectively.

Dengue is a potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions, which causes fever, nausea, as well as muscle and joint aches.

Local disease control authorities warned that Guangdong has entered epidemic season and the risk of outbreaks is growing.

The province has seen booming trade and tourism with Southeast Asian and South American countries, which have reported dengue outbreaks.
