Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Yucheng summoned Robert Forden, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, in Beijing after "irresponsible" comments and actions on Hong Kong SAR by the U.S. side, according to a statement by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

U.S. lawmakers on Thursday introduced the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, threatening to remove Hong Kong's status as a U.S. special trading partner unless Hong Kong provides an annual certification of its autonomy.

The U.S. Monday has expressed grave concerns to the proposed amendments, claiming that the "the continued erosion of the 'one country, two systems' framework puts at risk Hong Kong's long-established special status in international affairs," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus told reporters on Monday.

China has lodged a solemn representation to the U.S. over the remarks and urged Washington to respect the facts and the legal system in Hong Kong.

China has also strongly condemned and is firmly opposed to any interference in China’s internal affairs, said Le, urging the United States to stop plotting chaos in attempt to undermine Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

China will make further response depending on the actions of the United States, the statement said.
